The water we drink contains 3 basic
groups of impurities, these are organics, in-organics
and metals. Very few of these are particularly good for
us.
The main cause of taste, odour and colour in our water
are organics and all filter types remove these. Boiling
water for at least 10 minutes will kill bacteria, but
it will not remove chemicals or purify water.
But what about the substances you can’t taste,
things you can't see and don't even know are there? Many
additives are put into our water supply to control the
quality of delivery, but these additives are not good
for us and the smart thing to do is to remove them prior
to consuming the water, as at this point their job is
done.
Most Melbourne suburbs have about 40-50 ppm (or milligrams
per litre) of TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). To totally
remove these solids only Deioniser, Reverse Osmosis and
Distillation will give you fully purified water. Other
types of filters remove substances that are suspended
in water, but not the dissolved solids.
There are only two types of filters that will remove
all types of inorganics, organics and metals plus bacteria & virus
as well. These are Reverse Osmosis and Distillation.
Chlorine is the most common organic and all carbon filters
will remove it, but what of the other impurities you
might
be drinking.
This debate has been raging for many years and there are two
polarized points of view. We do not aspire to either side,
but provide the following information for you to make up your own mind."
Fluoride is used to prevent tooth decay and is an inorganic.
Banned in many countries, fluoride was once disposed of
as toxic waste and Australia is now one of the most heavily
fluoridated countries in the world. On the other side of the coin is the National Health and
Medical Research Council’s view that the small levels
of Fluoride in drinking water are safe. The Council also
believe that children have a 45% greater risk of developing
cavities without Fluoride.
Chlorine is used to kill germs, but because it contains
Trihalomethanes (THM’S) - known carcinogens, it
is closely linked to cancer. Moreover too much chlorine
can affect the taste and smell of your water, filtering
removes chlorine and invigorates your water.
Aluminum Sulphate is added to help clarify water and
to make it look better. However, NSW water authorities
have stopped adding aluminum, due to research linking
it with Alzheimers Disease.
Many people believe rainwater to be the purest drinking
water but levels of 200 ppm of TDS have been measured
in rainwater tanks. Many impurities find their way into
rain water, from air-borne pollutants, impurities from
your roof collection area and finally from the tank itself
where sludgy residual build-up further contaminates water
purity.
Spring water, trendy but not purified at all. It is
usually high in sodium, metals and often with high levels
of bacteria. Spring water is also expensive, running
a water purifier is up to 90% cheaper than bottled water.
Beauty experts, doctors, weight loss companies, the
Kidney Foundation - all recommend drinking 8 -10 glasses
of water every day. There is no better water than fully
filtered, purified drinking water, where quality is controllable
in your own office or home at the most economical cost.
The Water People offer all types of filtration units,
advice and service for your total drinking water needs.
