What kind of hot water systems are there?
Hot water systems can be categorised by two main features. The first is the kind of power the system uses. The most common types are electric hot water systems and gas hot water systems. As the name suggests, an electric hot water system runs from electricity drawn from the electricity grid, while the latter uses natural gas.
Other options that are becoming more popular are solar hot water systems and heat pump water systems. A solar hot water system is environmentally friendly with reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Heat pump systems are also on the cutting edge of green renewable technology.
The second feature differentiating hot water systems is whether they are continuous or instantaneous systems. Continuous flow systems, or hot water tank systems, store heated water that is, in turn, refilled as the heated water is used. Instantaneous hot water systems, or tankless systems, heat water on demand and don’t rely on storing hot water.
How do heat pumps and water heaters work?
A heat pump water heater functions using the same principle as a refrigerator, only rather than instead of pumping heat out of the fridge to cool it down, a heat pump moves heat into the water to warm it up. Then, using electricity, refrigerant is pumped through the tank, moving the heat absorbed from the surrounding air to the stored water.
